"Ain't nobody going to do something for us; we're going to have to do it for ourselves," he told an audience of 8,000 in his keynote address Sunday at the group's annual day of atonement, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported. The event at the Tampa Convention Center marked 15 years since the Million Man March Farrakhan organized in Washington, D.C. Today, Farrakhan said, the mission continues and the same lessons apply: atonement, reconciliation and responsibility. Holding the Chicago-based Nation of Islam's convention in the Tampa Bay area was a sign of its deepening ties with the Church of Scientology, which has its headquarters in Clearwater. Connected by shared interests in improving literacy and ending drug abuse, the organizations allied years ago when Nation of Islam members were trained to administer Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's study techniques and drug-treatment programs. Delegates at the convention had the chance to attend a Scientology "study tech" workshop.
